Jun. 15th, 2009 @ 11:19 am Busy week ahead!
Current Mood: I have moods?
This week looks like it'll be a long one! Tonight I have our bible study, tomorrow is core team meeting for church, Wednesday we have a dress rehearsal for Thursday night's concert, Saturday we're doing some more browsing of open houses and then off to Robert and Melissa's wedding, and Sunday we have tickets for some surprise event that [info]dvmpadawan won't tell me about until Sunday. So looks like I'll be busy busy this week...

Yesterday we went for a drive and looked at houses in the area that were for sale. We were only able to find one open house, so we'll have to do more online preparation for next Saturday's outing. But we were able to see some things we liked, some areas that have things for sale, and it was a fun and productive drive all the same!

We've been keeping ourselves pretty busy since our trip back to MI/WI, though I thought [info]dvmpadawan would've posted about it by now... but needless to say it was a great trip, we had fun visiting with family and in long van rides, as well as seeing a beautiful wedding. It was nice and relaxing, and was a much needed break!

So what had the potential to be a really good evening has pretty much whittled itself down to a disappointment... The Red Wings are giving away the Stanley Cup, the BBQ we were having with Nicholas and [info]jptrumptone and her new husband has disintegrated pretty much throwing away 2 days of cleaning... It's definitely not been the best of days. Next up I'll clean the grill, and I brought home some scallops from Pike's Market to cook out, as well as some flowers for [info]dvmpadawan, and after dinner looks like we'll work out as normal and probably call it a night. At least it sounds like we aren't getting shut out in the final...

Current Mood: I have moods?
So why is it that anytime I donate blood, I walk away without a mark, but anytime I have to have blood drawn for tests, even going to the "lab" where all they do is draw blood for tests, I come away with a giant bruise (sometimes two!)?

Today I went and finally had a physical (after about 12-14 years...), and the preliminary tests were exactly what I thought they'd be... a little overweight, with borderline prehypertension (mostly due to the weight), and asthma. The fun information will come back in about 2 weeks from the blood and urine tests. In addition to the lab work, since I have asthma, they wanted to run a breathing test... so I ended up having to wait around an extra 2 hours to do that. Breath in and blow out as fast as I can for as long as I can 3 times, then 7 minutes on Albuterol, wait 15 minutes, and repeat the blowing test. Magically enough, it seems my breathing improves when I've taken albuterol (from about 70 without to about 90 with, and I say this with sarcasm as I'd told them that I was on an albuterol inhaler when I was in the midwest... so it's a HUGE shock that albuterol would help, let me tell you).

But at least the new doctor seems pretty nice when he's not violating your personal space.

Tonight [info]spartanmd and Eric have arrived! They're staying with us for a couple nights, then continuing their tour of the Northwest. We're taking off Thursday night for our trip back East for a wedding and to visit with [info]dvmpadawan's parentals and grandparentals. Should be a nice relaxing trip!

I've sent an update to the core team at church with the work I've been doing for a new site design asking for feedback and information to put on the site. Work has been going well. The 90 day fitness program is on day 25, and things look like they're still on track there!

We've been to see Star Trek twice now, both times it was excellent! I'm excited to see where it goes from here. I've also been to see XMen Origins: Wolverine. It was also fairly decent (comic fanatics will likely not be as happy, but when are they?) I was happy they had Gambit (he was always my favorite), even if he was only a minor role...

I hope all is well, and have a great week! (Or month, or other indeterminate amount of time between this post and the next!)

Apr. 13th, 2009 @ 10:58 am Relatively quiet for once
Current Mood: I have moods?
So the last few weeks have been relatively quiet, which after the fun with the electronics and mechanical toys of late, I'm all in favor of a little quiet! We've got the elliptical fixed, so I'll be starting back up on my running and posting to FaceBook soon, and I've also ordered a fun fitness collection called P90. [info]dvmpadawan and I are going to give that a shot and see how a dedicated 90 days to a program will be able to get us in shape. I figure 90 days is long enough to see some results, but short enough that I can reasonably force myself to do it every day. If it goes really well, I may look into P90X. But that one is much more expensive (in that it requires a few fitness items we don't have, like a pull-up bar), so the P90 needs to be awesome before we go that direction. I'd settle with feeling well enough (and having enough new exercises to do) to get back into going to the gym. I think it's now been long enough that most of the resolutionists have cleared out and given up, and those of us that really would like to focus can now get a machine or some floor space without having to wait 40 minutes for the next set of reps...

Work is going well... I've picked up some new areas that are a little scary to be taking over, but will go quite a ways in digging me in a little deeper in terms of job security, so I'm all for learning some new stuff. But I'm sure it'll keep me busy, which certainly isn't a bad thing.

I've been bad, and have corrupted all the Sun people into playing Mafia Wars on FaceBook. It's pretty funny. I'm also trying to figure out when to do the next Merlot racking (I'd like to get it on some oak chips for about 3 weeks), as well as trying to think of something fun to do both for my website and the church website... I'm thinking of moving the church site off it's currently hosted site... it would be cheaper, and we'd have more control, even though we would be without some of the cool tools... bright side is since we're really not using all the tools, we likely wouldn't miss them anyway!

I seem to function better when I have a list to accomplish... so here we go!

1. Stop on the way home and pick up some cookie dough ice cream for [info]dvmpadawan. She's not having a very good day...
2. Clean Dora's water bowl and litter box
3. Update LJ with the Wendy update promised yesterday
4. Watch 24
5. Look up info on doctors at MultiCare... should schedule an appointment at some point, and now is as good a time as any.
6. Wash dishes and put away wine racking supplies... those I should've put away long ago...
7. Make dinner
8. Pay bills
9. Play with the kitty... I've been slacking in the dragging a PC cord around the apartment department
10. Sleep - up next!

That should be plenty for tonight!

Mar. 30th, 2009 @ 11:32 am Always playing catch up...
Current Location: work
Current Mood: I have moods?
Since it seems I'm always playing catch up on my posts, and the fact that I consistently get called out on posting a book when I do, I'll do my best to summarize, and will devote a separate post to the most fun of the updates that I have. (This doesn't however mean this still won't end up being a very long chapter of the book!)

The Spring Concert for RCCB went quite well! I was certainly surprised, and while it was by far not our best of concerts, it also wasn't the worst, to which I am certainly grateful. The new music that we have for our Summer concert is looking to be pretty cool, and hopefully we'll be a little (lot) more prepared this time around!

In the world of the elliptical saga, we're almost done (I hope)! Although last night I got a call talking about the scheduled maintenance I had for today... which I didn't have scheduled. So I called this morning and got that moved to Wednesday when [info]dvmpadawan is off work to be able to let them put our machine back together. Then hopefully we'll be ready to get the exercise party restarted! I'm also going to try doing the P90X workout... I have a DVD I can try to see whether I herniate anything trying to do the "extreme" workout, and if not, I may give keeping up with that a try for a while.

On a related note, I've been looking around for a doctor finally. I tried calling up the 2 referrals that I was given by MultiCare, however both of the referrals are no longer taking new patients... one is getting ready to move out of state (back to his home state), and the other is moving to Swedish to specialize. I was given 2 or 3 other names (which the lady just expected I would know...), and when I said I'd have to do some research still, she mentioned a 4th, which she said lots of people like, however since he's popular it always takes 2 weeks to get an appointment. So basically what I got from that is that there's one doctor there that everyone likes, but I won't be able to see him for a few weeks... I tried looking up doctors on [info]dvmpadawan's insurance site, and there doesn't appear to be anyone in Washington that takes her insurance. So I may end up just going with the MultiCare place (I've received recommendations for the system as a whole, though not specifically the location I'd go to), although I'll certainly take a look at a few doctors that were recommended to [info]dvmpadawan as well. But I figure after about 12 years, I should probably get a complete physical done. I already know I have borderline high blood pressure, and I'm overweight to boot, so I can guess the diagnosis. But still good to get everything looked at I suppose.

Over the last 2 weeks, we've been to see 2 movies. Monsters vs Aliens was pretty fun. We watched it in IMAX 3-D. Definitely the way to see it! Pretty predictable movie (its Disney after all), but keeps you entertained. Race to Witch Mountain was also fun, despite starring The Rock. I was always a fan of the original Witch Mountain movies (which we've since bought on DVD to go back and see!), and it also managed to keep us entertained, despite some corny dialog here and there, as well as a pointless side plot that didn't really do anything to further the movie.

I've gotten my friend Eric addicted to FaceBook. Its pretty funny. I've been hooked playing a new application on there called Hero World. It's incredibly simple, doesn't really require any outside involvement if you don't want it (though adding friends can certainly help a lot!) I'm also really sad that external baskets will be going away on Hatchlings... I'll have to take that down from my web page. I'll probably do that at the same time I update the wine log on there.

Two weeks ago I gave the Merlot its first racking. Definitely longer than I meant to let it go for the first racking, but I don't think it'll be affected in any way by the long first run. Hopefully in about a month I'll do the second racking, at which time I think I'm going to let it do it's oak soak. That racking will need to be timed carefully... I don't want to let it go longer than about 3 weeks. Much more than that and I'll risk over-oaking the wine, which would have a LARGE negative effect on the end product.

The Monday night bible study has been going pretty well! I've finally got books for everyone, and I think we've got the time for the study nailed down such that everyone will be able to show up on time. I did the leg work for this week's study, but haven't answered the questions yet, so I'm a little behind. But since we've moved back the time, hopefully I'll be able to get everything together on time. But it's an area to work at... it defeats the point of studying all week if I cram the questions at the end...

I was fortunate enough to get to go down to Portland for the first round of the NCAA tournament to watch Purdue play. We had a great time (despite paying more for nose bleed seats than I ever did to see most rock concerts, as well as issues finding parking, and finding decent souvenirs, and wandering undecidedly to find food), it was a lot of fun to see Purdue pull off the victory despite the lack of will to win (which unfortunately came back to haunt us with UConn), and to do so in spite of the definite hatred of the crowd (all UW fans who were there to see the next game, and didn't want to play us). But we got to see the UW game as well, which was pretty cool. We wandered a local mall and had food, shopped around, watched someone get arrested, walked at the park for a bit, and then headed home. Definitely a good time. Would've been really cool to have been at the Saturday game as well, but definitely couldn't afford that one, both time-wise and financially...

Only other thing to ramble about is the Wendy adventures... which I'll update hopefully this evening after study with some fun information! I hope all is well!

Tabula rasa.

So while I wait for my 9th day of testing the same subset of test cases for a defect to pass, I figure it's a good time to play a little catch up on LJ...

First off, everything you know is wrong. My previous thoughts about getting caught up on things... not working so well. Though not because I'm not doing things, but because more things keep getting thrown in... as well as my inability to have nice things. For instance, my mentioning that I should be able to get lots of running in. Not so much. I managed to break the elliptical (or more specifically, the right back guide wheel). So I took a day to work from home last week to have Sears come out and take a look before our warranty expires (which is tomorrow actually!), and the guy came, and had the same issue we had when we bought the thing... he came prepared to fix a treadmill, not an elliptical. Apparently Sears' inventory control namespace doesn't have enough characters in the DB to fit the full name of the product we bought. We have a ProForm StrideClimber XP600 Elliptical. Unfortunately, they also have a ProForm StrideClimber XP600 Treadmill. And according to our receipt (and apparently what the service guys and delivery guys get to see), it says: "ProForm StrideClimber XP". Awesome. But at least the fix is covered by warranty (when they come BACK to fix it on the 19th), and as just replacing the 2 guide wheels would've cost about $155, and tune-ups are recommended every year, I bought the 3 year extended coverage from Sears for $200. With the gift I have for equipment, that should pay for itself within the next 6-12 months (at a minimum when I get them to come out next year to do a tune-up). So that hassle has been fun.

The Monday night bible study has started up, and the first week went OK (once everyone got there about 30 minutes late). We decided we'd start ourselves in by supplementing our study with a book by Stu Weber, called Tender Warrior. We were going to go through this book in my last study, but we ran out of time. I'm looking forward to it, but actually finding it in local stores has been a mess (I've found one copy out of 6 stores, and it wasn't even a Christian Bookstore I finally found it in (it was Borders)). So I've had to order the others, which will hopefully be here by Monday for our next meeting (though given my recent luck, that's nigh impossible). Not that it will matter, as likely as not it'll be like last week where bible study will consist of just me. Oh well, such is life :) You can't help people that don't want to help themselves...

Then as if breaking 2 DVD players and an elliptical trainer wasn't enough, coming home from church last Saturday, we stopped in Bellevue for dinner (after driving around looking for the unfindable books), and managed to get ourselves stranded there because Wendy decided she was tired. I pulled out the nice new jumper I bought (as previously mentioned) and tried to get her going, but to no avail. But it puts the last nail in Saturn's coffin of a diagnosis... they kept telling me I just don't drive it far enough to charge the battery. But from Renton to Woodinville is MORE than far enough to charge the battery, and the jumper just made it make a nice clicking sound when it tried to turn over. Good stuff! So we had to call and have us all towed back to our apartment (I wasn't sure where I wanted to take it, as Saturn obviously isn't going to know what to do, and it was getting late and [info]dvmpadawan had to work the next morning), and since the tow truck couldn't fit in the garage, we had to push Wendy out of the parking garage down to the tow truck to get her towed. This brought a good line of thought to mind though when considering where to park... parking in an upward garage MUCH BETTER than parking in a subterranean garage in regards to removing a vehicle via human power (which in most cases total human power < 1 horse power). As Wendy is just not reliable, and her own maker can't even figure out what's wrong (or refuses to), we've decided to let Wendy go, and went yesterday to go car shopping. I did some searching for a few days before on cars.com, and found a few that I liked and that looked like they'd be in our price range. We then went out in search of the next addition to the family, and I think I've found the one for me. It's a 2007 Ford Mustang convertible, V6, dark grey similar to the color of my '73 RoadRunner actually, and it ran really well, was clean, and still has warranty on it, and the dealer will pay for all oil changes for it. Unfortunately (or fortunately as the case may be), it was the first car I drove, so we didn't get it yet. Now it gets to go through the God test... I've prayed that if it's the right vehicle for me, then it would still be there on Saturday when we can go back for it. If it's not the right one, it'll be gone. So now the wait is on for the answer! I also had the chance to drive a couple of Jeeps I liked... only real issue with them was that when you pull too close to a light, you have to be a contortionist in order to bend around in a way to see the light due to the narrow front window profile and the bar across the front. It is good info to know.

Last night we also had our dress rehearsal for tonight's city band concert. Should be interesting... the music is really cool, but we're definitely not prepared. But after tonight, the damage will be done. The lighting crew last night was having some issue finding all the lights on the boards (they were apparently just re-done), so we weren't able to get many of the lights adjusted to keep them from blinding us... hopefully they'll have a better understanding of their lighting setup tonight. This will also be the first time I've played a concert at Carco (it used to be the band's normal theatre before they moved to the IKEA Performing Arts Center). It's a much smaller venue, so it'll be interesting to hear the difference.

Saturday I'm going to a Men's Breakfast in Renton where our pastor will be speaking. Should be a good breakfast, and a good time of fellowship. And it's nice that something is down in my neck of the woods for once! ;-) Then we should be off to see if my car is still at the lot! If so, we should be all set to go! If not, then the search will just have to continue. At least we've got the pre-approval out of the way, and as long as we decide by April 10th, we'll be ready when the right car comes along!

So for me, it's back to the grind at work... apparently I'm Mr CanDo. Now that I've gotten their build testing done, they want me to start in on some of the testing that others have been slacking on (because I know EVERYTHING about what others have been working on or something).

Seriatim,
~Kyle

My cars have all been aptly named. Or maybe it's like the Doctor says, there's power in a name... it defines the object. Either way, my car wouldn't start this morning (again). So despite the numerous times I've taken my car in for this issue, and continue to tell them the car has a short that is slowly draining the battery, it has once again died. Wendy has lived up to her namesake once again. So I'm going to go pick up a "working" car jumper after work (I bought one before, but it never worked, and since it was on clearance, they wouldn't take it back... not cool). So it seems I shouldn't have slept in the extra 45 minutes this morning, and should've gone in to work either on the 101 early, or at least been leaving at a time when [info]dvmpadawan could've given Wendy a jump. But at least I got to see how the 148 route works, which is what I'd need to take anytime outside of the narrow rage of 101 times available. So definitely not the end of the world.

This week I should have plenty of time to get caught up on all my little projects (like updating LJ). And I should be able to get plenty of running in as well. I've begun posting my daily running in my status on FaceBook to add to accountability in running. So far it's been pretty good. Tonight I'll watch my stored 24, do some laundry, run, and work on updating my website I think. Tomorrow I hope to get the wine racked, and get some updates on the church website done. And anything I don't get done on those days, I'll be able to take care of next week, as I'll have the place to myself while [info]dvmpadawan is off at Symposium. Her friend Audrey is making it out here a little early for Symposium, and they're going to go do some touristy stuff again this weekend. I think the main goal is that Audrey's co-worker, who is also coming to Symposium, wants to see the top of the Space Needle... looks like it should be an OK day for that, partly to mostly cloudy on Friday and Saturday.

Last weekend, [info]fzyisabird came to visit, and we all had a fun time at the Pacific Science Center. We went to see the Lucy's Legacy exhibit. It was pretty cool. Lots of neat fossils and stories about Ethiopia. It also had lots of neat religious information for those regions, which I'm always interested in. I like religious history, it's always fascinating to see how influences move throughout the world, and the changes those influences make on the different societies located there.

So that's the bulk of what's been going on here. I hope all is going well!

So why is it that timing around me always has to suck? I'm finally able to do something really cool for [info]dvmpadawan, which just happens to cost a lot of money, and it gets immediately followed by owing more money to the government for taxes. So much for positive financial change with the new government... And then to add to it, at some point a friend that is going through a divorce is going to want me to come and testify in Indiana, against another friend I've known longer, in regards to child custody. So if it's determined that I'd have any impact there, I suppose there's some more cost. Which all upsets [info]dvmpadawan (rightly so) as we were hoping to get to send her on some trips to visit her friends this year over any 3 day weekends she might have come up. I still intend to send her on those, but it'll just take us a little bit to recover from our month's spending, and is all very frustrating that everything has to happen all at once. Just means that for fun we're going to have to look a little closer to home for a while... less dinners out, more inviting friends in. We've plenty of new Wii games to play that we haven't been home to play, and a perfectly good elliptical that will get some use now too. So it's definitely not the worst that could happen, and in the end we're still going to enjoy our recent purchase a year from now, and I've filed a new W4 at work to keep the same issue from arising next year with the taxes. Yea for funding fuel for the problem. On the bright side, if the market drops below 6500, our money will be about as valuable as a peso anyway, and what amounts we've spent won't mean too much once the looting begins... (I've got my guns, do you?)

The 1234567890 epoch has come and gone, and we're all still here. I suppose that's one more bullet dodged. ;-)

Today I was more lazy than I meant to be... so I'll be paying for that tomorrow. I did get up and run though, and went to lunch with Nicholas, so I didn't sit around ALL day, but I did mean to take out the trash, and vacuum and steam clean the floors, and to work on getting a prayer ministry page up and running on the church website. So not as far along as I meant to be. So I'll get to work on those tomorrow, as well as work on Nicholas's website, and getting our taxes done. Also definitely need to focus on cleaning, as we'll be having a guest staying here next weekend, and this place definitely needs some work before then.

I had a really good Valentine's Day. I got to eat tasty sushi for lunch, and [info]dvmpadawan made us cajun salmon for dinner. I also got a large Reese's heart and some Play-Doh, which will be lots of fun! We got cookies from [info]dvmpadawan's Aunt Denise, and played some Winter Sports on the Wii. We also spent quite a bit of money on a related note... but more details on that will be coming on my other half's blog as soon as she's done torturing her friends to try and guess what it is we've bought.

Work this week will be interesting, as our manager is out for the week, and our release was completed last week. So should be a good week for getting some things caught up without getting hassled by people. But I'm sure that ideal will only occur in my head.

I hope everyone has had a great week!

So this week has been pretty good. Aside from breaking 2 DVD players. Seriously, what's up with that? But the plus side is that we found a nice (cheap) DVD/VCR combo player at Wal-Mart that will now allow us to play some of the VHS tapes that we have. Would be nice to eventually get them copied to a DVD, but just haven't had the time (or money for upgrades) to do it. The eventual goal will be to get a Blu-Ray player for the living room... but all in good time.

Got to spend a couple days with [info]dvmpadawan as she's had 3 days off in a row! We went shopping (as I often joked about in my Facebook statuses), went to some nice lunches and dinners, and had a good time wandering as well as relaxing around the apartment. We got a few things cleaned up, slept in for a few days, and all in all was definitely a good weekend.

I went and helped Nicholas get his web page template online, and get his accounts set up. Still quite a bit to do, but it'll be a really nice site when we're done... he'll be able to link his blog to auto-update on his page, he'll have a gallery where he can show his photos for his photography work, and should be a fun project to keep up to date.

This week at work I've been helping our manufacturing group with some cgi work... Sometimes it's harder to consult than it is to just do the work. The setup we're looking for is to import info into a database from an exported csv file. Simple enough, and would take me a day or two to put together in terms of formatting/design, etc. But the goal is that the manufacturing guy wants to do this project as a learning project... so I've been asked merely to advise... which means lots of sample code and instruction on the hows and whys... much more time consuming than if I just did it for them. Oh, well. It's not like I have anything else to do... (Read that with extreme sarcasm ;-)).

This week should be more of the same... hopefully getting one release out of the way so that my plate will clear up a little bit. I also need to get some details together for the men's bible study I'll be starting up in March. Should be interesting, as I've never led one before. But I've made it clear that this will be a group of Barnabases... not a Paul with a bunch of Timothys. If anyone has suggestions of topics, I'd be glad to hear them!

Current Mood: I have moods?
From XKCD:

Last night I recorded the Super Bowl on the DVR, and [info]dvmpadawan and I watched it once she got off work. The commercials were certainly a disappointment (IMHO, the best one was the "High Life" 0.5 second commercial shortly after halftime... good investment in terms of money/impact ratio, especially compared to the other commercial content this year). The game was a good one though, poorly called in a lot of places, but both sides received their fair share of poor calls in the end, so the outcome was to be expected. That's what happens when you have that many penalties and score with too much time left on the clock. I'm sure many people will debate back and forth between whether they should've downed it on the 1 instead and taken some time off the clock, but when you're behind, I think you have to take the points when they're guaranteed, and with the way the defense had been playing, I think he did what you had to expect. It was just a poor time for the defense to nap (and for the Steeler's offense to wake up). Of course "poor" I suppose depends on who you were rooting for...

We went this weekend and saw the movie "Taken". It was pretty good, lots of action and moved along really well. We also had a nice dinner out at Melrose Grill. I really like the food there, but they're super expensive... totally worth it, just not able to afford it more than a few times a year.

The really exciting part of this week is that [info]dvmpadawan and I got new G1 phones. I'm having a lot of fun playing with the new toy, and finding some neat apps to play with as well. I'm probably going to download the SDK at some point, and see what kinds of tools are available in it to develop my own app. I just have to figure out what it is I want to write. In terms of projects, I'm worse than [info]dvmpadawan... at least all her projects are related to knitting... I've got the autobar, the church website, my own website, some cross stitch stuff that I've been working on for almost 2 years, the merlot wine, etc. Eventually I'll finish one... I'm thinking I'll either do something related to wine making, or maybe something knitting related (with extensive help from [info]dvmpadawan). It seems like all the normal simple stuff has been done... tip calculators, lots of barcode scanning apps, games, etc. So I thought something off-the-wall would be fun. Maybe a neat shortcut app for how-to on knitting stitches or calculating needle sizes, etc. Or an app that lets you track in progress wines, calculate alcohol percentages and amounts needed of ingredients based on batch size and certain measurements... Not sure yet :)

Oh, and Happy "6 More Weeks of Winter" Day!

Current Mood: I have moods?
So I went to have a filling fixed last week, and while I was there, they fixed the tooth next to it... unfortunately they weren't sure whether they would be able to get by without needing to do a root canal, or if they could keep from hitting the nerve... so they did the work, and told me that if there's a lot of pain, that they might have to go back and do the root canal instead. As of the last few days, I've been keeping myself medicated as it seems the second is likely the case. I'm hoping to make a trip in tomorrow and see if they can tell whether it's actually the tooth that's sore, or if it's just the fact that they've messed with it this past week and just needs time to heal... Here's hoping for the latter!

And since yesterday's list went so well, I thought I'd try a second day in a row!

1) Update John & Stacy with info from Children's Ministry
2) Call and sort out insurance questions (they apparently can't figure out which is my primary and which is my secondary...)
3) Rack the Merlot
4) Update Children's Ministry site
5) Finish the autobar page on my own site
6) Watch 24

Seems simple enough! Time to start in!

Jan. 18th, 2009 @ 02:54 pm Today's To Do list...
Current Location: running around the apartment
Current Mood: I have moods?
As expected, last time's list went incomplete... so here's another hopeful run at the things to do around the apartment...

1) Lunch with [info]dvmpadawan
2) New cat toy for Dora (She's been good and hasn't destroyed the new couch! So hopefully this will help to keep that a reality!)
3) Drop off newspapers at the food bank newspaper collection bin
4) Laundry
5) Harvest the catnip on the balcony and bag it up for use later in kitty toys
6) Throw out (and clean up after) the Halloween Jack-O-Lantern puddles...
7) Reorganize storage
8) Move extra bar stools out to new space in storage
9) Condense some of the clutter from 2nd bedroom into new boxes freed up by clean-up of storage - Yay for help from [info]dvmpadawan!
10) Clean the cat box
11) Clean the kitty's water (or more specifically, the water's pump... it gets clogged with cat hair...)
12) Get a decent photo editor so that I can work on the kids' page of the embassy website
13) Finish the autobar page on my own web page
14) Clean up desk and start a new binder for 2009 financial stuff
15) Wash dishes - More thanks [info]dvmpadawan!
16) Take out trash
17) Reorganize my side of the closet
18) Clean the primary fermentor
19) Sanitize the 2nd carboy to prep for racking

Obviously these are not in the order that I'll tackle them in, but at least they're all written down...

A posse ad esse.

--Update--
Not too bad on the list today :) Filled a box to donate with clothes, which I'll add to the other 2 we have, and will take those to the Salvation Army drop-off sometime this week!

So today is the first day back for one of our QA members we lost in the last lay-offs... He's returned from his study abroad, and it'll be good to have another set of hands around in QA to help with getting through stuff... he was probably the most knowledgeable of the product in the group, and it's good to bring help back in that doesn't need trained in the product :) The only downside to it is the way it came about. While I like the guy, and he certainly is an asset to the team, we're still in the same hiring freeze that came from laying everyone off in the first place, which supposedly was to cut our spending to a point to make us profitable. Purely a numbers thing. If that's still in effect, where do we have the money now to bring him back, just because he's back from his study abroad? And we've all absorbed his previous tasks... there isn't a gap to be filled at the moment... usually when you hire someone, you hire them to do a specific job that needs done... and we're covered with our current staff. So no more money than we had, no gap to fill... and the decision wasn't made by our QA manager. In fact, our Engineering director said at coffee one morning (To the group):"Hey, we're bringing Bob back." (To our manager)" "By the way, is that OK?" So good to know who really has any say here. It's good to be buddy buddy with directors in a company. But at least we're bringing back someone we would've hired if we'd had the resources to do it... better than bringing back a buddy that wasn't worth it in the first place! All right in time for my year review too, and since I was the one to absorb most of the extra responsibilities in the first place, it's nice to know the extra effort is going to be rewarded by taking those back away, and no raise because the money that would've come to me as a raise for picking up the slack is now being used to hire back another team member.

Aside from the rant above, things are going well. We made some progress Sunday cleaning in the 2nd bedroom, and successfully moved the couch Saturday. Tomorrow I have an early appointment at the dentist to get a filling put back in. I should probably also schedule a cleaning at some point.

Things I want to do today:
1)Find the shiny new egg I saw last night in Hatchlings (Thank's [info]kkychuck! Your basket made this task easy!)
2)Clean my primary fermenter. Seriously.
3)Rack the Merlot. Though that might not be possible until tomorrow as I need to sterilize the other carboy first...
4)Sterilize the 6 gal carboy
5)Put together a Children's ministry newsletter template
6)Select a website template for the Children's ministry
7)Schedule a new patient appointment with a doctor. I figure this year is as good as any to see a doctor :-p
8)Work on cleaning out at least 2 boxes from storage
9)Laundry

Lots more I'd like to do, but who am I kidding... I'm not even going to get this list done... I'll probably end up sitting on the floor (no couch!) watching last night's 24 season premiere that I DVR'd...

Jan. 7th, 2009 @ 09:16 am Happy New Year!
Current Location: work
Current Mood: I have moods?
I hope everyone has had a great Christmas and New Year! We had a nice low key one here... went to see The Tale of Desperaux on Christmas day, and had [info]jptrumptone and her boyfriend Nicholas over for New Years, where we played Rock Band 2, Scene it, and Mario Kart. It was a good time for all. We opened some gifts while on video conference with [info]dvmpadawan's parental units, which she was quite happy about. The only draw back was that the gifts from her parents were stuck in Portland, so we weren't able to open THEIR gifts over the video conference... but we finally received them about a week later and had a second conference to open those. So everything worked out in the end there.

We decided a few days ago to go check out some of the after Christmas sales. One of the things we were interested in checking was whether the couch and recliner set we've been drooling over at JC Penny's was on sale. Or rather was having the sale that we were waiting on, considering everything at JC Penny's is ALWAYS on sale in one form or another. We had decided that the set would be our anniversary present to ourselves... but we wanted to wait until the half price plus free recliner sale came around again to buy it. When we got there, unsurprisingly it was not the set that was on sale (the set next to it currently had the promotion going). However, after asking the sales guy if he knew when it might be going on sale with that promotion, he managed to look it up and find out the details, and went ahead and gave us the set for the promotion price. So we will be getting our new couch and chair delivered next Thursday or Saturday for the price that we were looking for, without it actually being available for that price. We were quite excited. So Saturday I'm going to rent a UHAUL truck to take my current couch over to Nicholas's (he's wanting it to replace his dying futon). I figured since I got it for just the cost of the UHAUL I used to get it from Eric's mother-in-law, that I would pass the couch along for the same offer. But since Nicholas doesn't drive, I'll go get the truck, and he'll reimburse me for it.

Work has been a little slow, though it's going to pick up soon. In the mean time, I've been playing with my automated bar software. I'll update my web site with some screen shots of the software that I've written so far... I'm quickly reaching the point where I'm going to need some hardware to play with in order to get more done. So I've bid on a FloJet pump on ebay that seems to be what I'm looking for... it's a Bag-in-Box pump (like for coke syrup for a soda fountain), so it should be sturdy and strong enough to pull anything from thin vodka to thicker grenadine through the tubes. It's CO2 powered, so I'll need to find myself a small CO2 container and some tubing as well. I'll also have to do some research on exactly the type of serial board I'm going to need, and how I would link that to the pumps... I'm hoping there's some documentation somewhere that has some examples and such on how to do the wiring and programming of the boards. That's going to be the large learning curve for this project. But it should be a lot of fun. I also need to rack the Merlot wine soon... probably on Sunday.

I hope everyone is doing well!

Respice finem.

Dec. 14th, 2008 @ 01:48 pm snow!
Current Location: home
Current Music: poor dvmpadawan being stuffy
So half-way through December, we've finally gotten a little snow! Unfortunately people out here don't know how to drive in snow... and the few who may forget to take into account the fact that there are actually HILLS here... Half of knowing how to drive in snow is knowing when you shouldn't be out driving in the snow! I was planning on having lunch with Nicholas today, but to get there I would have to drive down out of Fairwood, and back uphill to SeaTac... And while I have plenty of confidence that [info]dvmpadawan's car could make it, I don't have any confidence in the other drivers around here... I would likely get stuck behind some yahoo that has stopped half way up one hill or another and couldn't get going again... On my way out of the parking lot, I saw 2 cars that were having trouble getting over the speed bump coming into our apartment lot... that was enough for me to decide that I didn't need to be out there driving with people that can't get a car over a speed bump in the snow. Granted, in the lot there is a lot of ice as well... but that's going to be the case on the hills as well, and no sense being out there all night because I can't get home when I can just stay home and stay warm. There's plenty that needs done around here anyhow. As for work tomorrow, I may have to take a look at how the roads actually look this evening (I'll take a walk out to Petrovitsky to get a real road's conditions) and see if I may have an excuse to work from home tomorrow. Although, if the buses are running, tomorrow is the first day of [info]dvmpadawan's 12 hour days... and I was thinking I may just get up when she does and just catch the Fairwood 101 instead of bothering to drive to the park-and-ride at all... it limits my leave times, as well as my returns... and it's a longer bus ride, but I can read or nap, and saves needing to get the car out at all. I'll just have to keep a closer watch on time (and weather) for getting home. So we shall see. Since I'm housebound today, I'm thinking I should be able to get all the packages ready that need sent out, and hopefully get some of the living room cleaned out. Currently there is no floor in the living room.

Current Mood: pissed off
So I was in a great mood when I got home... I went and did a little bit of shopping, and was able to find us a Christmas tree topper that was really nice! I also found suitable gifts for everyone I needed to get gifts for, and was having an excellent afternoon. So I decide to surprise [info]dvmpadawan by going ahead and putting it on the tree. First thing I notice when I open it, is that it has about the largest box in the middle of the power cord I've seen... and this is including most laptop power cords... So then I attempt to put it on the tree... and of course the star weighs too much. I try bunching several top branches together... still no go... So after some thought, I rig a brace at the top... and finally I succeed. Whether it will stay there through Christmas, I've no idea... but for the moment all is well... so I wrap the brick into the tree so it won't fall, then go to plug it into my lights... and it has a polarized plug. Of course, my Christmas lights (and I dare say all Christmas lights for indoor use) does NOT. So I can't plug the cord of the topper into the string of lights. So, being mad I go and sit for a bit, then resolve to find an extension cord I can run up the core of the tree. Unfortunately in my irritated state, I managed to pinch my hand in the closet door while looking for an extension cord. This was the last straw. If there's going to be a topper on the tree, it won't be my doing.

Of course this has all taken up my afternoon when I was going to (after the "quick" decorating)get some wrapping done so I can send out gifts, and start on Christmas cards. All of which I've not started. Oh, well. Now that I'm done ranting (well, for now... I've another topic of it that may be coming soon...), I suppose I should go be productive.

Casus belli...

Current Mood: I have moods?
So it's been a good week or so... I had my 29th birthday, at which we went bowling and had dinner at the Acme Bowl lounge. I also got a new telescope from [info]dvmpadawan. We went to Fry's and picked it out. It'll be a lot of fun to play with once the clouds part in the evening... in July...

Also, [info]dvmpadawan received a surprise this week. She's been a little upset with not having any of her Christmas decorations here, and so going out to the plethora of Christmas decorations in the stores made her a little sad... so I called her parentals and had them send out her Christmas stuff. Her surprise arrived on Tuesday, and it was a very welcome gift. So we're looking at using Sunday to do some decorating around the apartment, and to get us an apartment sized Christmas tree. There's a couple nice ones at Wal-Mart, and I think we're going to go Saturday morning to Ikea and Fred Meyer to take a look as well before we get one. Then Saturday afternoon we're meeting up with some of her co-workers at the Puyallup fairgrounds for a Christmas Bazaar or similar such thingy going on there to check out fun stuff. So it should be a fun day out!

Work this week has been annoying... a whole day of nothing to do, followed by "mission critical" panic of stuff that needs done by end of day that is received at 4pm. It's supremely annoying when one is trying to get away from work to make it home in time for a Christmas Concert with city band. Last night I was late getting home because of having to stay an extra hour to help support get a server going for a demo and test plan they're going to have to execute at a customer site. No idea why it had to be done last night, as the trip isn't until next week, and we've had all day today when it could've been done as well. Such a load of crap. Oh, well... At least I made it home in time to get ready and made it to the concert with [info]dvmpadawan in plenty of time, and even managed to get to eat. The concert went well, though on Gene and I's big moment, our conductor decided that we needed a bigger pause before coming in than we had in the dress rehearsal, so of course we took our breath way too early, and so missed the nice pretty G we had played the night before. But we were nice and loud on our solo part that we'd been ripped on earlier (which had become a running gag) for our "p" marked section (we were told to play our "p" as "ff"... still not sure I understand...).

Today is our office Christmas party. We're going to Jillian's from 6-10, though I'll likely only stay until about 8. That should let me catch a bus and get me home about 9. Seems a good goal. Otherwise, today at work has been a little slow... so I've started coding on my AutoBar. I need to come up with a really fun clever name for it, so if there are any suggestions, I'd love to hear them. Today I've done some DB design, and some minor UI controls... but no real functionality to it yet. The fun part will come once I've chosen a serial based controller and pumps (or I suppose I could do USB based... depends on what hardware I can find for cheap!) But I'm pretty excited about it... the front of the application will come along pretty quick I think. It'll be the serial programming that's going to be fun, but I'm looking forward to learning all about it. I've been "helping" Eric with some serial programming with the set top boxes, which has helped me to become a little more familiar with the options available from RealBasic, so I think I'm going to give it a shot in using RealBasic for the application platform. Should be nice and multi-os compatible that way (RealBasic lets you compile for Mac, Windows and Linux from the same code base).

There was something else I was going to mention, but I can't seem to recall what that was... so until I do, I hope all is well!

Nov. 24th, 2008 @ 12:59 pm The week in review
Current Mood: I have moods?
Lets see... last Wednesday I walked out to my car to go to work, and had a flat tire... turns out I had a nail in my tire. Oops. It was a quick (and free) fix, just annoying to be late for work and changing a tire early in the morning...

I was able to watch Purdue WIN a game in HD. I was glad I got to see Tiller's last game... I just wish it was in January. But I hope he enjoys his retirement all the same. We had a pitch-in at church Saturday night. It was a lot of fun, and there were a lot of tasty things to eat... I brought a sauerkraut and kielbasa dish in honor of [info]dvmpadawan's ancestry (it was an ethnic pot-luck!), even though I'm not really a fan of sauerkraut, nor had I ever made the dish before... but it apparently turned out OK according to [info]dvmpadawan, as well as was attested by the fact that it was all gone before I even got to it in the line. The only down side to the event was that those of us that are helping by serving at the Women's Christmas Dinner had a "short" meeting to go to that didn't allow me a chance to eat my dessert, and which kept me from having much of a chance of socializing with anyone (kind of the point of the event), and it was in no way "short", nor did it really give us any information that we didn't already have... More than a little frustrating. But such is life... it's not the first nor the last time wasting meeting I'll attend I'm certain.

Last night I had a terrible headache... but we had a good time during the day shopping at half-price books, wandering the mall the day after the mall shooting (we thought there might be some good deals if there was blood on stuff), ate a late breakfast at IHOP, wandered around looking for a new bluetooth headset for [info]dvmpadawan (we ended up getting a nice one that was on sale at Fry's), chatted with [info]dvmpadawan's parentals over video chat (her parents have come a long way in the computer dept.), watched the end of the Colt's game (yay for sweet payback!), and had dinner at Jimmy Mac's Roadhouse. So the day was certainly worth the headache (which went away fairly quickly once I got to where I could take something for it).

So all in all, not a bad week. I didn't get around to getting my DVR set up as I had hoped unfortunately... so I missed the 2 hour '24' TV movie last night. Though from what I've heard today I didn't really miss much... apparently they kept to the "2 hour" real-time format for the show, which lent to it actually building up to very little since realistically nothing can really happen in 2 hours of real-time... but I'll still have to take a look and see if I can watch it on FOX's 24 online page.

Tonight's goal... clean the desk, clean out the computer box of random crap, run and watch Monday Night Football. If I can do all that, I'll be quite happy. And if I'm smart and think about it when I get home, it would be good to do that while the washer and dryer are running. But we'll see how far I get.

Locus standi,
~Kyle
